The short answer. Powerball is a multi-state US jackpot game. Each $2 play is one line:
five white numbers from 1–69 and one red Powerball from 1–26. It is drawn Monday, Wednesday
and Saturday at 10:59 PM US Eastern, which in the UAE and India means the result is waiting for you on
Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday mornings.

Two machines run at every draw. The first holds sixty-nine white balls and releases five of them. The
second holds twenty-six red balls and releases one, the Powerball. Your line has to be read against
those two sets separately, because they are separate: a white number on your ticket does nothing for you if
that same number comes out as the red ball, and the reverse is equally true.
That separation also explains a result that surprises newcomers. Because the red ball has its own
drum, it can carry the same number as one of the five white balls. A line of results with the same
figure appearing twice is correct. The order in which the white balls fall does not matter either;
results are normally listed smallest to largest, and your ticket is matched on which numbers came out,
not when.
Powerball is not a national lottery, because the United States does not have one. It is run by a
group of state lotteries through the Multi-State Lottery Association, and each participating lottery
sells tickets under its own rules. That is why two people in two states can hold identical numbers for
the same draw and still need to go to different operators to claim.

What does one $2 play actually buy?
One line, entered into one draw. The jackpot needs all six: five white balls and the red one. Below the
jackpot there are eight smaller prize levels, and the pattern is worth knowing because it is not what
most people expect. Matching the red ball on its own wins something. Matching two white balls without
the red ball wins nothing. In full, the nine ways to win are:
- five white balls plus the Powerball — the jackpot
- five white balls, no Powerball
- four white balls plus the Powerball
- four white balls, no Powerball
- three white balls plus the Powerball
- three white balls, no Powerball
- two white balls plus the Powerball
- one white ball plus the Powerball
- the Powerball alone
We deliberately do not print what each level pays. Prize values are set by the official lottery, some
of them vary with sales, and a figure copied into an article goes out of date quietly. The official
Powerball rules for the state where a ticket was bought are the only reliable source for amounts.
What is Power Play, and is it worth understanding?
An optional add-on, chosen at the counter
Power Play is something a buyer can add to a Powerball play for an extra charge. It is not automatic.
A ticket either shows it or does not, and nothing done after the purchase changes that. If you are
checking a ticket for someone else, look for it printed on the slip before you start.
It multiplies the smaller prizes, never the jackpot
At each draw a multiplier value is chosen separately from the main numbers. On a ticket that carried
Power Play, a non-jackpot prize is multiplied by that value. The jackpot is untouched. Results
listings show it beside the numbers as “Power Play” followed by the figure drawn that night.
It does not change the odds
Power Play has no effect on which numbers are drawn or on your chance of matching them. It only
changes what a winning line pays at the lower levels, which is why it has nothing to do with the
odds figure below.
What are the odds of winning the Powerball jackpot?
Powerball top-prize odds: there are 11,238,513 ways to choose 5 numbers from 1–69, and the Powerball is drawn from a separate pool of 26, so matching everything is 1 in 292,201,338. This is arithmetic on the game’s format, not a claim about any draw.
The arithmetic has two parts, and the second one does most of the work. Choosing five numbers from 69
already produces a very large count of possible lines. The red ball then multiplies that count by 26,
because every one of those white combinations can be paired with any of the twenty-six red balls. This
is also why the red-ball pool is the number to watch whenever a game changes its format: shrink or grow
it by a few and the jackpot odds move far more than a change to the white pool would.
Two things follow that are easy to lose sight of. Buying ten lines gives you ten chances in that same
total, not a meaningfully different game. And every draw is independent of every other one. A number
absent for months is not due, a number drawn twice in a week is not hot, and a pattern in the archive
is a description of the past rather than a forecast. Our lucky numbers page

Converted for 24 September 2026. US clocks change in March and November, which moves every US draw by an hour against the Gulf and India; this table is recalculated every time the page loads.
The draw happens late at night on the US East Coast, which puts it in the early morning across the Gulf
and South Asia on the following calendar day. Monday’s draw is a Tuesday result for you,
Wednesday’s is Thursday’s, and Saturday’s arrives on Sunday morning.
That day shift causes most of the confusion we see. A ticket is dated with the US draw date, and our
Powerball results page files every result under that US date too. If
you open the page on a Sunday morning in Dubai or Mumbai, the newest result will be labelled Saturday,
and that is the one your Saturday ticket needs. Twice a year, when US clocks go forward or back, the
local time in the table above moves by an hour while the US time stays fixed at 10:59 PM. The table is
recalculated every time the page loads, so it is always right for today.

How do I check a Powerball ticket from outside the US?
- Find the draw date printed on the ticket. That is a US date; a multi-draw ticket lists more than one.
- Open the Powerball results page and pick the row with that exact date.
- Compare your five white numbers with the five white balls drawn, ignoring the order.
- Separately, compare your red number with the Powerball. Do not count it as a sixth white ball.
- If the ticket shows Power Play, note the multiplier drawn for that date alongside the numbers.
- Confirm anything that looks like a win with the official lottery in the state of purchase before
relying on it.
Step four is where people go wrong most often. A ticket with four matching white numbers and a red ball
that happens to equal the fifth white number drawn is a four-white-ball ticket, not a five.
